Best Wildlife Experiences in Townsville

06 Aug Best Wildlife Experiences in Townsville

Australia is renowned the world over for its unique wildlife and there is no better place to see it than in Townsville. There are so many great places in or around Townsville where you can really experience the wondrous natural world and learn not only about the animal’s habitat, what they eat and what makes them unique but also what you can do to protect them for future generations.

Here are a few of our favourites:

1 – Billabong Sanctuary

Set in beautiful natural surrounds on the banks of a billabong you can experience wildlife in a range of settings at including eucalypt forests, rainforest and wetlands. Located just twenty minutes from Townsville you can:

  • Attend an interpretive show about a cassowary, koala, dingoes, snakes, parrots, wombats, crocodiles, birds of prey and lizards
  • Feed kangaroos
  • Cuddle a koala
  • Have your photo taken with a python
  • Hand feed a cassowary or Krefft’s turtle
  • Watch barramundi jumping for food
  • Pat a wombat
  • Hold a baby crocodile
  • Pose with a dingo.

Visit the Billabong Sanctuary website for more information about these great things to do.

Location: 17km south of Townsville in Nome on the Bruce Highway
Opening hours: Every day from 9am-5pm (except Christmas Day)

2 – Bungalow Bay Koala Village, Magnetic Island

Who doesn’t love a koala? If you have never seen one up close or have always dreamed about holding one then why not take a 20-minute day trip by ferry over to Magnetic Island?

At the Bungalow Bay Koala Village, you can take a special wildlife tour three times a day.  During the tour one of the friendly park rangers will take you on a tour through the wildlife park where you not only get to know more about Magnetic Island koalas and hold one but you might also get to hold a saltwater crocodile (a small one of course), a python or a lizard.

The tour lasts two hours giving you time to experience more of Magnetic Island before taking the ferry back to Townsville.

Location: 40 Horseshoe Bay Road, Magnetic Island
Opening hours: Tours operate three times a day

3 – Reef HQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium

The Great Barrier Reef covers approximately 35 million kilometres.  Now that’s a lot of fish, coral and underwater animals to see.  At Reef HQ you can get up close and personal with more than 300 species of Queensland’s beautiful fish, corals and marine life.

Currently the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium Reef HQ has daily talks and tours including the ‘Predator Dive show’ where you can talk to a diver whilst they are swimming in a reef wreck tank with sharks and other large fish with big teeth; a special lagoon tank where you can touch a marine creature; or you can take a walk under the waves in the ‘reef tunnel’. On certain days you can even watch sharks being fed from the tunnel!

With so much to see and do why not spend two or more hours at Reef HQ?

Location:  2-68 Flinders Street, Townsville
Opening hours: Daily, 9.30am-5pm (except Christmas Day, Anzac Day and the Australia Day public holiday)
