How to Make the Most of A Rainy Day in Townsville
We’re pretty lucky here in Townsville with an average of 300 sunny days per year, thanks to our tropical but dry climate. But if you do happen to experience some rainy weather in Townsville, you’ll still find plenty of fun and educational activities to enjoy.
Queensland Museum Tropics
Open: Daily from 9am to 4pm (Closed Good Friday, Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day).
Cost: Entry to galleries is free, some exhibitions incur an entry fee.
Location: 70-102 Flinders Street, Townsville.
Queensland Museum is custodian of the state’s natural and cultural heritage, caring for more than a million items and specimens in collections that tell the changing story of Queensland. Head along to see one of the permanent displays such as ‘The Deep Sea’, ‘At Home in the Tropics’, ‘Enchanted Rainforest’, ‘The Great Gallery’ or the ‘Sciencentre’ or catch one of the visiting exhibitions. Townsville Museum and Historical Society
Open: 9am to 2:30pm, Monday to Friday. Closed on weekends and public holidays.
Cost: Entry fees apply.
Location: 1/27 Barbeler Street, Currajong.
The Townsville Museum is dedicated solely to preserving and displaying the history of Townsville from the early 1860s. Offering an extensive collection of artifacts, photographs and building plans of early Townsville buildings, some of which no longer stand today. The Museum is the memory bank of Townsville’s past, preserving it for future generations to experience and enjoy. Exhibits include ‘Before Electricity’, ‘Early Pharmacy’, ‘Mavis Cussons’, ‘Organ Exhibit’ and ‘Doll Exhibit’.
Jezzine Barracks Military Museum | Army Museum North Queensland.
Open: Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from 9am to 1pm. Anzac Day from 11am to 2pm. Closed Good Friday and over Christmas.
Cost: Free admission.
Location: Jezzine Barracks, Mitchell Street, North Ward.
Located in the newly refurbished building at the centre of Jezzine Barracks, the museum offers three galleries with collections extending from the establishment of the first defences at Townsville and Thursday Island until the present day. The Jezzine Barracks Military Museum is staffed by part-time Australian Army personnel and a dedicated team of volunteers.
Perc Tucker Regional Gallery
Open: Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm. Saturday and Sunday 10am to 1pm. Closed on Mondays, public holidays and during exhibition change over.
Cost: Free.
Location: Corner of Denham and Flinders Streets, Townsville.
Residing in one of Townsville’s finest heritage buildings, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery is a dynamic visual arts centre with an impressive collection of North Queensland art.
Indulge in a Spot of Shopping
Rainy days are the perfect excuse to indulge in a little retail therapy. Spend a few hours checking out the boutiques along Flinders Street and Gregory Street, or hit Castletown Shopping Centre for Big W, Toymate and 120 speciality stores. There’s also PlayTown, a free indoor children’s play area that’s good for the littlies.
Canon Park Entertainment Centre
Open: 9:30am to 9:30pm daily.
Location: 52 Hervey Range Road, Thuringowa Central.
Canon Park Entertainment Centre is your one stop shop for indoor fun. Catch a latest release movie at Reading Cinemas, go bowling or partake in some karaoke at Kingpin, or try out gel blasting at Fun Shot Fun. Canon Park Entertainment Centre is also home to a wide range of restaurant and eateries offering everything from Indian Cuisine to Gourmet Pizza.
Check out the waterfalls, after the rain has gone.
Once the rain has subsided, Townsville’s waterfalls are at their most brilliant. Pay a visit to Australia’s highest single drop permanent waterfall, Wallaman Falls or one of these other beautiful Townsville waterfalls.
