29 Aug Townsville Tours & Adventures

Townsville is not only famous for its world-class diving on the Great Barrier Reef, but it is also an adventure playground with a bounty of experiences available. It offers scenic lookouts and waterfalls, tropical islands, national parks and wildlife.

Here’s just some of the fantastic Townsville tours and adventures that await you:

  1. Visit Magnetic Island
Take a 20-minute ferry ride to Magnetic Island, with its beautiful bays, bushland hikes, and wild koalas.
  2. Snorkel or Dive on The Great Barrier Reef
Take a 2.5-hour boat ride to a nearby reef, where you can snorkel or dive with sea turtles, stingrays, reef sharks, Maori wrasse, and a dazzling diversity of other marine life among the colourful coral reefs.
  3. Head to Billabong Reserve
Get up close with Australian native wildlife, interact with them, and pose for photos. Highlights include cuddling koalas and wombats, hand-feeding kangaroos and wallabies, and holding one of the reptiles.
Location: 17 kilometres south of Townsville on the Bruce Highway
  4. SS Yongala Dive
The SS Yongala is one of the world’s most famous wreck dives. It’s home to a startling density and diversity of sea life, including turtles, rays, sharks, sea snakes, barracuda, grouper, and large schools of trevally.
  5. Scale Castle Hill
A 290-meter-high pink granite monolith, with beautiful 360-degree views from its peak. Walking tracks lace the hill and you can see all the way across the city and beyond the coastline to Magnetic Island.
  6. Take a Scenic Helicopter Flight
Guests can jump on board a scenic flight, enjoy a reef and rainforest day package, escape to a secluded sand cay, cast a line with HeliFish, design a tour of their own or, for the more adventurous, take the controls and fly themselves!
  7. Day Trip to Paluma National Park
Situated on the southernmost edge of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, only 45 minutes drive from Townsville, the lush rainforest surrounding Paluma is alive with a fascinating diversity of birdlife and features Jourama Falls.
  8. Go Beach Hopping
Townsville’s five northern beaches are the ideal getaway. Bushland, Saunders, Toolakea, Toomulla and Balgal Beach combine the rugged bush with necessary amenities and beachside hideaways.
