There’s something truly majestic about watching water cascading from a rocky ledge, and Townsville’s surrounding regions offer some amazing waterfalls to check out! Including Australia’s highest permanent single drop waterfall!
Wallaman Falls
Yep, we’re starting with the big guns! Located within the Wet Tropical World Heritage Area, Wallaman Falls is Australia’s highest permanent single drop waterfall, with Stony Creek plunging 268 metres in a clear single-drop.
Viewers can take in the sights from the main lookout and then walk to the second lookout which enjoys gorgeous views of the gorge and the Herbert River Valley.
Getting there: Wallaman Falls is located in the Girringun National Park Ingham. It’s approximately a 2.5 hour drive from Townsville, so a good option if you’re looking for a day trip.
Jourama Falls
Fringed by rainforest, Waterview Creek tumbles down this multi-tiered waterfall with cascades and rapids. There’s a pleasant walk through open woodlands to a creek crossing. At the signposted junction, about 100m beyond the creek crossing, continue to the lookout or visit the creek further upstream. The 600m track to the lookout is all uphill but the reward is views out over the falls and the surrounding rainforest.
Getting there: Jourama Falls in located in Paluma Range National Park at Yuruga and is approximately an 80 minute drive from Townsville.
Little Crystal Creek
The crystal clear waters from the freshwater creek cascade under a heritage-listed stone arch bridge built during the depression in the 1930s. It’s also a popular spot for a refreshing swim in the warmer months.
Getting there: Little Crystal Creek is located in Paluma and is approximately a 60-75 minute drive from Townsville.
