A Trail for Every Rider
The Cape Pallarenda Mountain Biking trails offer something for every skill level, from relaxed coastal rides to more technical, rocky descents. All trails are clearly marked, and many connect in loops, giving riders the flexibility to plan a short cruise or a full day of adventure. Here’s a look at some of the most popular tracks:
Shelly Beach Trail
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 8.2 km return
Allow: 2 hours riding time
This trail follows the edge of a marine plain, weaving through coastal woodland before reaching the western end of Shelly Beach. The return ride follows the same path. Be prepared for softer sand and more demanding sections as you near the beach.
Smedley’s Trail
Difficulty: Intermediate
Distance: 6.8 km circuit
Allow: 1.5 hours riding time
Accessed via a link from Under the Radar (6.6 km from its eastern end) or 2.8 km from the start of the Shelly Beach Trail, this rewarding loop circles Smedley’s Hill. Riders are treated to sweeping views of the Town Common wetlands, Bohle River, and Coral Sea. Expect steep climbs and natural rock obstacles along the way.
Freshwater Trail
Difficulty: Intermediate
Distance: 3.6 km one way
Allow: 1 hour riding time
This scenic trail begins where the Shelly Beach and Lagoon Trails meet, or 1.2 km along the eastern end of the Lagoon Trail. It crosses through coastal dune vegetation, over the Freshwater Lagoon dam wall, and leads to bird hides overlooking the wetlands. Riders can return the same way or loop back using the Lagoon or Under the Radar trails.
Under the Radar Trail (UTR)
Difficulty: Intermediate
Distance: 10.1 km one way
Allow: 2.5 hours riding time
This narrow, two-way trail is designed for cross-country mountain biking. It begins 500 m along the Shelly Beach Trail on the western end and 700 m along the Shelly Cove Trail on the eastern end. Riders traverse the slopes of Many Peaks Range, with impressive views of the Coral Sea and offshore islands. Expect rough surfaces and some steep sections. You can return the same way or connect to other trails and park roads to complete a loop.
The Cape Pallarenda trails are shared between walkers, runners and bike riders. Please be careful and courteous to all trails users and follow the shared trails give way code. Trail surfaces vary, so it’s a good idea to check conditions before heading out.
More Than Just a Bike Ride
Cape Pallarenda offers more than a great ride. The area is rich in World War II history, with bunkers and lookout posts dotted along some of the trails. There are also plenty of photo-worthy stops, with views across Cleveland Bay and out towards Magnetic Island.
The dry season (May to October) is the best time to visit, when the tracks are firm and the weather is ideal for riding. Be sure to bring water, sun protection, and let someone know your plans before you hit the trails.
